Old Town Square
INFORMATION & DETAILS
Address
Staromestske Namesti, Prague 1
The Square is definitely the most important square of the city together with the oldest one. The square was formed already in the 10th century as a market place. However, also it was the most popular gathering place of the city and a place where executions were taking place in the middle Ages. Moreover, it is the place where you would also find some of the oldest buildings in Prague, for example the stone House of the Stone Bell, which comes from the early 14th century. The Old Town Hall with the famous Astronomical Clock is situated here. The beautiful gothic Church of Our Lady before the Tyn (called only Tyn Church) is the dominant of the whole square. The church is called after the Tyn courtyard – Ungelt –, which you would find behind it. At the bottom of the square lies another church – the Baroque Church of St. Nicholas finished in 1737. The monument of John Hus, a reformer who introduced a reformed protestant church in our country, lies in the middle of the square.
